Massage Therapy

Chiropractic and massage therapy, used in combination, form a powerful healing approach that addresses your health problem on many levels. Whether your condition is the result of traumatic injury, repetitive overuse, or stress, together chiropractic and massage can greatly speed your return of health so that you can get back to a pain-free, productive life.

Why Chiropractic Is Important

Long-term muscle tension and sudden impacts, such as a fall or a car accident, can pull and hold your spinal joints out of their normal alignment. The misalignment of one or more of these vertebrae can interfere with the spinal nerves that are exiting off of the spinal cord through little “windows” that are created by the positioning of one vertebra on top of another. These windows, called foramina, become distorted when the vertebrae become misaligned. The result is that the exiting spinal nerves become choked and irritated, causing a disruption in the nerve signal transmission. These vertebral misalignments, called subluxations, can cause pain or other symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or burning.

Dr. Steve Goninan will use spinal adjustments to return your vertebrae to their normal positioning and restore joint mobility. This restores balance to the nervous system and allows for a return to health and wellness.

Why Massage Is Important

Spinal subluxations, troublesome enough on their own, are almost always accompanied by tension or injury in the soft tissues of the body – also known as muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia (connective tissue that permeates muscles and bundles them together).

Soft tissue pain can actually spread because it causes protective muscle tightening in surrounding areas. Over time, tight, inflamed muscles and fascia (together called myofascia) suffer poor circulation and can develop glue-like myofascial adhesions which prevent muscles from lengthening completely. Painful trigger points can also develop, often referring pain or tingling to other areas in the body. In extreme cases, tight muscles can compress nerves just as painfully as a subluxation.

Addressing soft tissue problems is an important complement to chiropractic care. Muscles move joints, while ligaments and fascia support them. If a subluxation is adjusted without addressing related soft tissue problems, your tight muscles may pull the vertebra out of alignment again. This can slow down the progress of your chiropractic care.

In general, massage increases circulation to the muscles, which can reduce painful swelling and inflammation, and promotes healing by removing waste products that have built up over time and bringing oxygen and nutrients to your soft tissues. Like a sponge absorbing water, both fascia and muscles being to soften and return to normal.

Massage also triggers the body’s relaxation response, interrupting a cycle of stress and muscle tension that can build in response to life’s daily challenges. A massage will relax and rejuvenate you, making you less likely to slip into patterns of tension that can contribute to soft tissue problems and subluxations.

At Lawrenceville Family Chiropractic, through chiropractic care and massage therapy, we can help restore your health and offer preventative care to support your ongoing good health and well-being.
